Rimu HOY Awards 2011
This medium-sized, five-level house serves up a delicious choice of living spaces and a tantalising feast of textures. The exterior is a happy polygamous marriage of plastered concrete panel, bandsawn plywood, corrugated steel roofing, aluminium joinery, exposed aggregate paths and drive, and kwila and polished concrete decks. Inside the 213sq m house: polished concrete floors in the entrance, bathrooms and laundry; oak timber floor in the kitchen-dining area; textured pure wool carpet elsewhere; and negatively detailed plywood ceilings above, with a ply partition between the dining and lounge sections of the L-shaped living area. The kitchen’s lacquered units, engineered stone bench tops, mosaic tiles and stainless steel appliances pile on the visual and tactile interest, and the light-coloured materials and paints don’t argue with the occasional strong dose of colour administered by the furnishings. Decks on either side provide sunny outdoor living morning and afternoon. Both open from the super-duper kitchen with pantry and a large island bench whose raised bar and curved crockery storage conceal the sink at the end from view. An internal glazed window in the family room illuminates the hall; the fourth bedroom was situated for use as an office; fencing screens the clothesline on the separate laundry deck. Stellar work.
